"Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring."

Danny Lyon

Last Tuesday I had the unique pleasure of hearing Danny Lyon give a talk at my University. I had previously purchased one of his books, Knave of Hearts, which he signed for me. While the talk was less academic than I thought it would be, he had a sense of humor and wit that kept things interesting. The image above is currently being displayed in our art museum's photo exhibition. It is an image that tells of freedom, rebellion, and youth.

If you're interested, check out his blog: Bleak Beauty

Kevin Van Aelst

Kevin Van Aelst is a photographer whose work has been commissioned by the likes of New York Times Magazine, Wired Magazine, and the Boston Globe. The images are colorful, creative, and fun. Many of them feature underlying critiques on society. I especially enjoyed the series of images featuring the fingerprints. It's something I've never seen done before!

Kathleen Hawkes

Kathleen Hawkes is an MFA student at the University of New Mexico. Her thesis show is coming up this April in Albuquerque, NM. Her more recent photos deal with the surface of the photograph. She composites her photos together seamlessly. The images above are from the series "Tableware" in which she photographed tableware in a variety of ways. One of my favorite series done by her is titled "Belonging." In this series, she has catalogued burned objects and objects in suitcases that people would bring with them if they could. Her work is beautiful.

Jan von Holleben

Jan von Holleben was born in 1977 and brought up in Germany. He is the son of a cinematographer and a child therapist. His work has been exhibited globally. He creates photographs that are fun and filled with youthful spirit. However, his more "mature" works (of which there are many images on his site) are no less beautiful or insightful as the ones shown here. Some of the aspects I enjoy most about his images are the vibrant colors and creativity embedded in the pieces. They inspire me to no end.

Kindle Commercials - Stop Motion

I most likely will never invest in an electronic reader just because I love actual books, but these commercials are so cool!
I love stop motion.

Open Eyes

I like my skirt better in this one, but in the one below I think the position of my body is better. It was fun, though!

My first officially staged self portrait!

Laura Letinsky

Laura Letinsky is a contemporary photographer who is famous for her still lifes. She is currently a professor at the University of Chicago and has had many exhibitions all over the world. She has stated that she likes to photograph mundane objects. Often she photographs within the confines of her own home, but she also has a studio where she can create different set-ups. All of her work is meticulously staged and shot with film. She works mostly with natural light.

I think there's this strong sense of minimalism to her work. In her presentation at my university on this past thursday, she stated that she always has too much stuff lying around. I really wanted to ask her if she would ever consider taking photographs of a more cluttered space. Why so minimalist? Ever since I found out about her work earlier in the semester, she has become one of my favorite photographers. I have never seen still life photography look so beautiful, haunting, and sensual all at once.

NEGLECT

So I guess I've been neglecting this particular blog due to my recent fascination with tumblr.
Well, I'm finally in a photography class so hopefully I'll get back to doing regular postings soon.
But for now, I'm mostly on tumblr so here's the link: Shrouded Intentions
(The above photo is not mine. It is an example of something I post or reblog on tumblr.)

Simplicity

via Sjofugl

Simplicity at its best. For when I want to run and never look back. For when I want to be out in the fresh air. Alone and free. And full of life. Youth. Independence. Looking up. Better days ahead. Optimism. Hope. Beauty. A better tomorrow. Life.

REED + RADER

As I was looking through some older posts on Ilovefake Magazine's blog, I came across this photographer duo and was caught, not by all of their images, but by the last two that they posted. My favorite two favorites from this particular series are shown above.

Check out their official website.
